Ball Busters Open Season!

Folks, The Bachrach group opened their season last night with all the hope and promise that a new season brings.  Spirits were high and expectations were higher.  Allan Ageman made a surprise visit to the field to give the troops a last minute pep-talk and the possibilities seemed endless!  The game started and reality came crashing down all around us.  By the time the first inning was over we were down 6-0 and looking every bit a team that had not played together in over 9 months.  To be sure, we played a very good team in the Macy’s Stars, a former division I team that was now playing in division II, but no excuses here – we were thrashed last night.  A good old-fashion butt-whipping!  In the end, we were mercy-ruled and the game was called after 6 innings.  The final score being 14-2.   A “Mercy Rule” is applied when after four innings of play, one team or the other is up by at least 12 runs.   We made all the usual mistakes, poor fielding, throwing to the wrong base, not hitting relay throws, poor hitting, poorer base running and just an overall lack of cohesiveness and communication on the field.  The runs kept piling on and we were unable to turn the assault off.  The end was inevitable and the only thing we could hold onto was our pride. On the other hand, believe it or not, there were signs of encouragement and reason to stay positive.  First of all, it was the first game of the year and it showed.  No apologies but nothing to hang our heads about either.  Meredith Picard played an outstanding right-field making two sensational catches on well-hit balls that seemed destined for extra-base hits.  Matt Last showed he’s a player with the bat and looks to be a good acquisition for the Ball Busters.  Matt’s Conroy’s sister, Katie, played an outstanding second base and will be a key contributor to our success this year.  Matt Conroy himself played an outstanding game using his bat and his body.  On one play he knocked down a line-drive with his leg, scrambled to retrieve the ball and then through behind the runner at first to take away what was already a base hit and turned it into an out.  An outstanding play!  James Sammarco played outstanding at short stop last night.  James made throw after throw at short and has solidified his spot in the infield.  As usual, Oliver made a tremendous catch in deep center field, in ice-cream cone fashion, to take away a sure homerun from one of Macy’s best hitters.  Our bats throughout the line-up were lively and we hit the ball well.  Last night, every time we hit the ball, it was right at one of their fielders.  Eventually, those balls will fall. So that’s it.  You ball Busters suffered a tough loss but Rome wasn’t built in a day.  Looking through the smoke last night there was reason to stay optimistic and look forward to our next game which will be April 26th in Central Park.  It would be great to see some familiar faces out there cheering your Ball Busters on!  After the game, some of us took solace in the tavern across the street and shared some beers with the Macy Stars.  A good group of people.  As always, even in defeat, any day that ends playing softball is a good day!   Jeff  Jeffrey M.
